Our History

Established on 1 September 1858 by Jean Emile Serisier, Dubbo Public School is the oldest school in Dubbo and has been educating local children for more than 160 years. Originally known as Dubbo National School, classes began in October 1858 with just 36 students under the guidance of the first teacher and principal, Mr William Hutchinson.

As Dubbo grew, so did the school. By the late 1800s, enrolments had reached over 700 students, leading to new buildings and expansions. Over the years, the school has held several names — including Dubbo District School and Dubbo Central School — before returning to its proud title, Dubbo Public School, in 1958.

Today, Dubbo Public School continues its long tradition of excellence in education. We are proud of our rich history, inclusive programs, and strong sense of community, which reflect the values that have shaped our school for more than a century and a half.
